CAVANSITE

Cavansite Origin & Physical Properties

Cavansite is a rare blue mineral with the chemical composition of calcium vanadium silicate. Fine specimens appear flower like with a deep saturated bright blue color to teal blue color. It has a orthorhombic crystal habit that often grow in clusters of radiating prismatic rosettes. Cavansite spherical balls commonly grow individually or in clusters on stilbite and is almost always attached to its host rock. The specimens are actually a conglomeration of tiny crystals aggregates, rather than individual crystals.

It appears that Vanadium is the cause of the bright blue color, while trace amounts of this element in Apophyllite crystals found in the same area causes a green coloration. It is a newly identified mineral, with the first studies and classifications done in the 1970’s after discovery of specimens in Oregon, U.S.A. However, it is assumed that the mineral had been discovered long before in Pune, India along with Apophyllite crystal deposits. The mining location in Wagholi, Poona district of India is the only commercially known location for Cavansite in the world.
