CHAROITE

Charoite Origin & Physical Properties

Charoite is a rare complex silicate mineral with complex interlocking patterns of fibrous crystal growth. It comes in a swirling array of purple and lilac colors. When polished, it has a pearly luster, and swirls of purple, white, black and lilac patterns. Charoite is made up of potassium, sodium, calcium, barium and strontium in a silicate form. It has such a complex make up that geologists have yet to determine the cause of its purple and violet colors.

Charoite was discovered along the shores of the Chara River in Sakha Republic, Siberia some time in the 1940’s.  It wasn’t until 1977 that Charoite was scientifically identified as a newly discovered mineral.  To this day, this is the only known origin in the world for Charoite.  Charoite was formed millions of years ago when and upsurge of magma mixed with the  limestone host rock.  The molten magma mixture, rich in mineral elements, fused with the host limestone rock and created a new rock formation we known as Charoite today.
